THE PROGRAM

Day 1.

Meeting at the airport. Arrival transfer to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (40 minutes). Accommodation in double rooms in the hotel. Rest.

Day 2.

Depart from Petropavlovsk on a truck to the north to Klyuchi settlement. Lunch in the way in Milkovo settlement. On the road there is a fine view for grand volcanoes of Klyuchevskaya group. Overnight in Kozyrevsk settlement.

Day 3.

Drive to Plosky Tolbachik volcano. The road is in picturesque places of wonderful Kamchatka nature. It will be needed to wade some fast mountain rivers. Magnificent coniferous forest is shifted by a moonscape, hardened lava flows and cones of recent eruptions. Camping on Vodopadny stream near Plosky Tolbachik volcano. Excursion in the country.

Excursion to Severny Proryv cones, observation of the Dead forest. In result of crack lava flowing in 1975, three slag cones appeared and 15 lava flows happened. 10 sq km (3.9 sq mi) are covered with lava flows.

Day 5.

Excursion to Yuzhny Proryv and “burnt forest”. It is one slag cone and broad lava fields of 39.5 sq km (15 sq mi). Lavas are rather diverse by their morphology and structure (flat boulders, plates, waves and so on).

Day 4.

Ascent Plosky Tolbachik (3,085 meters or 10,121 feet), 7-8 hours. Crater observing. Plosky Tolbachik is notable for its broad top engaged with a shallow caldera of 3.7 km (2.3 mi) in diameter, filled with a glacier. There is an active crater in its western part. The crater is about 400 meters (1,312 feet) deep, and is 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) in diameter. From the top cyclorama is open of Klyuchevksaya group of volcanoes and more far chains and group of about 50 slag cones located on one of places of its southern slope. The famous Big Tolbachik crack eruption occurred there in 1975-1976. Lunch, dry snacks. Return to the camp.

Day 6.

Trekking to Tolud volcanology station (6-7 hours, 20 km or 12.43 mi). Dry snacks on the way. Along the trail, lifeless moonscape is shifted by alpine meadows zone. Tent camp. Overnight in the tents.

Day 7.

Crossing over Tolud pass (1,291 meters or 4,235 feet). The pass is not very steep. There are a lot of dry rivers and streams on the way. Trekking takes 5-6 hours, 17 km (10,56 mi). Overnight in the tents.

Day 8.

Crossing over Tolbachinsky pass (1,503 meters or 4,931 feet) between extinct Ovalnaya Zimina volcano and Plosky Tolbachik. Dry snacks for lunch. On the way, observation of polennitsa basalt formation Unique polennitsa formation looks like a pile of logs. A magma massif, pressed out here, while being hardened, was divided by a system of cracks for small posts of five-cornered cross section. Having fallen to the foot they formed piles of these blocks-bricks, as if specially prepared for construction purposes. Trekking takes 5-6 hours, 18 km (10,56 mi). Tent camping at the foot of Bezymyanny volcano. Overnight in the tents.

Day 9.

Ascent Bezymyanny volcano (2,869 m or 9,412 ft), ascent to the “neck”, at the edge of the old cone, 2,680 м (8 792 ft), 8 hours. Bezymyanny volcano is a low conic massif which had been considered as extinct for a long time to sudden explosions in 1955 and 1956. Now it goes on being active. In 1956, the explosion destroyed a top of the volcano cone (it became 200-300 meters (650-1,000 ft) lower) and a crater of 1.5 x 2 km (0.93 x 1.24 mi) The explosion broke, fell, and somewhere burned trees within a radius of 25 km (15,53 mi). After this catastrophe a cone, so called Novy (New) cone, started to grow in the volcano crater. The height of the cone is over 500 m (1,640 ft) now and it goes on growing. Dry snacks for lunch. Return to the camp. Overnight in the tents.

Day 10.

Wading across the Stydennaya river and trekking to the Baraniy stream (13 km or 8,08 mi). Overnight in the tents.

Day 11.

Trekking to the road in the area of Kopyto (hoof) hill. Drive to Kozyrevsk settlement.

Day 12.

Driving back to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city. Accommodation in the hotel.

Day 13.

Free day. If weather is good, for those who wish, heli excursion to the Valley of Geysers or a sea trip in Avacha bay.

Day 14.

Visiting the fish market. Shopping. Souvenirs. Departure to the airport.
