THE PROGRAM

Day 1

Meeting at the airport. Arrival transfer to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (40 minutes). Accommodation in double rooms in the hotel. Rest.

Day 2

Depart from Petropavlovsk on a truck to the north to Klyuchi settlement. Lunch in the way in Milkovo settlement. On the road there is a fine view for grand volcanoes of Klyuchevskaya group. Overnight in Kozyrevsk settlement.

Day 3

Drive to Plosky Tolbachik volcano. The road is in picturesque places of wonderful Kamchatka nature. It will be needed to wade some fast mountain rivers. Magnificent coniferous forest is shifted by a moonscape, hardened lava flows and cones of recent eruptions. Camping on Vodopadny stream near Plosky Tolbachik volcano. Excursion to Severny Proryv cones. In result of crack lava flowing in 1975, three slag cones appeared and 15 lava flows happened. 10 sq km (3.9 sq mi) are covered with lava flows.

Day 4

Ascent Plosky Tolbachik (3,085 meters or 10,121 feet), 7-8 hours. Crater observing. Plosky Tolbachik is notable for its broad top engaged with a shallow caldera of 3.7 km (2.3 mi) in diameter, filled with a glacier. There is an active crater in its western part. The crater is about 400 meters (1,312 feet) deep, and is 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) in diameter. From the top cyclorama is open of Klyuchevksaya group of volcanoes and more far chains and group of about 50 slag cones located on one of places of its southern slope. The famous Big Tolbachik crack eruption occurred there in 1975-1976. Lunch, dry snacks. Return to the camp.

Day 5

Excursion to Yuzhny Proryv, observation of the Dead forest. It is one slag cone and broad lava fields of 39.5 sq km (15 sq mi). Lavas are rather diverse by their morphology and structure (flat boulders, plates, waves and so on).

Day 6

Drive to Esso settlement, visiting the water pool with thermal water. Moving to Anavgai settlement. Accommodation in the camp in Menedek reindeer breeder site. The site is located on a mountain river bank in a couple of kilometers of Anavgai settlement. Even and Koryak dwellings – yurtas and yarangas - and constructions for storing clothes and hardware - balagans and mamychkis – are located on the site. Ritual wooden figurines reliably watch trails, safeguarding the hearth from evil spirits. Introduction to the mode of life of the indigenous people – Evens. Concert. Visiting the water pool with thermal water. Overnight in the tents on the site.

Day 7

Departure to Paratunka. Accommodation on the holiday camp, bathing in hot springs.

Day 8

Drive on the truck to Mutnovsky volcano 2,323 m (7,621 ft), 160 km (99,42 mi). Visiting Vilyuchinsky waterfall on the way. Tent camping. Overnight in the tents.

Day 9

Foot excursion to the crater of Mutnovsky volcano. The path to the crater goes over the Pemzovy (Pumice) ridge. Ascend to the ridge is not very steep and takes about 1 hour. From the ridge, moving on snow field to the volcano, with a little ascend, tourist get into the crevice of the Vulkannaya river which flows from the crater though a fracture. In the crevice the river is closed by the glacier. Passage to the crater is not complex. The deep crater is surrounded with cliffs. From the eastern side to the very bottom of the crater a glacier descends from the top. Mighty jets of steam and gas are released through glacier cracks. There is a lot of boiling mud pots, fumaroles, and beautiful deposits of burnstone on the crater bottom. Trekking to the crater 3 hours. Ascend 800 meters (2,625 feet). Observation of the crater 2 hours. Dry snacks. The distance of the way back 12 km (7,46 mi). It will take 7-8 hours. Return to the base camp at the same way. Observing of a waterfall in Opasny (dangerous) canyon on the way. Overnight in the tents.

Day 10

Ascend Gorely volcano 1,829 m (6,000 ft). Ascent on the volcano is not complex. Old lava flows, slag fields. Kekurniks – hardened lava remains of various shapes are very interesting. Ascend takes 2-3 hours. Level difference is about 900 meters (2,953 feet). Snacks on the top. Observation of main craters of the volcano. Ascend takes 6-7 hours. Return to the camp at the same way. Trekking to the truck 8 km (4,97 mi). Drive to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Accommodation in a holiday camp in Paratunka.

Day 11

If weather allows it, those who wish, can take a heli excursion into the Valley of Geysers and Uzon volcano caldera for additional fee. Departure to Avacha volcano in the region of volcanic plateau, between Avacha and Koryak volcanoes, located at 900 meters (2 952,76 feet) above sea level. Driving takes 2.5-3 hours. Accommodation in the tourist shelter. Dinner. Overnight in a house (4-6 people in a room).

Day 12

Ascent Avacha volcano (2,741 m or 8,993 ft). The path lays in slag fields, crosses a deep crevice of the Sukhaya river and goes to a volcanic crest. Ascent on the western slope of the volcano and range like crest of the ancient strato volcano. The remains of the ancient volcano round the young cone as "a collar”. Dry snacks on 2,000 meters (6,561 feet), then tourists start ascend on a young cone of the volcano to the top. Angle of the slope in pre-top part is 30°. Snacks on the top, observation of the crater. Return to the base camp at the same way. The ascent distance is 8 km (4,97 mi). Ascent will take 6-8 hours, descent about 3-4. Dinner. Drive to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Accommodation in a holiday camp in Paratunka.

Day 13

Transfer to airport. Departure.
